The m78a1 plasma rifle

A large blocky rifle issued to some special forces. It is designed to accelerate and fire globules of plasma using both strong electromagnets and a highly ionising laser to ionise the air ahead and reduce the friction of the fired semi-solid plasma pellet against the air, reducing the natural tendency for the pellet to disperse in an atmosphere. Despite this the rifle's effective range is limited enough to confine it to short-range encounters only, where it is most effective at punching huge burning holes through things.
